This past week, culminating Sunday morning during our worship service at Word and Worship Church – North Braddock, has been a very exciting one with my worship team. This past Thursday we spent a lot of time really talking about our countenance in worship.
Our countenance is basically our face and the look we have on it. In Genesis, God confronts Cain about his countenance after Cain killed Abel, his brother (Genesis 4:5-6). God knew what was going on in Cain’s heart simply from the expression on his face.
Our face is one of the most important instruments we play in worship. It is the window into our hearts (Proverbs 15:13, Nehemiah 2:2). If we go up on stage as vessels of God, to lead His people into His presence during a worship service, what shows up on our faces can make or break us. We ultimately need to have our hearts right with God as we go in front of His people, so that our faces shine with His glory and not our gloom. Some people may think that I am talking about showmanship or performance. Performance is empty. It is simply putting on an act. Worship comes out of a real encounter with a real God, we shouldn’t be able to stop from expressing that all over our faces.
This past week I feel like my team really took a step closer to understanding this concept and applying it genuinely. It makes me proud of them but excited for the people we lead and the future of our worship services in North Braddock.
